NEXT NAC MEETING IN JANUARY AT CONESTOGA MIDDLE SCHOOL
The next meeting of the Greenway NAC will be on January 18, 2007 at 7:00 PM. We will meet in the Library at Conestoga Middle School. Our guest speaker will be State Senator Ryan Deckert. This will be a good time for his visit since the new legislative session will just be starting in January. Senator Ryan Deckert represents our area in the Oregon Senate and has been very involved in tax issues. He will join us to give his outlook on the state government and then answer questions.  Plan on meeting your state senator and discussing any concerns you may have. Since January can have snowstorms, please remember that the meeting will be cancelled if the school closes for a snow day or if the school closes early due to snow.

NEW CELL TOWER AT SOUTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
A NAC meeting attendee at our last meeting asked the Mayor about the new cell tower at Southridge High School. Mayor Drake has supplied the following information; The Planning Commission approved the cell tower and the appeal period expired on September 18th.  The facility will consist of an 84 foot tall monopole with 6 panel antennas for a total height of 97 feet.  The site is located along the southeast edge of the track on the high school property, immediately adjacent to the asphalt path and near the long jump pit.  It is in the center of the school property and not near the edge that would be adjacent to any homes.

AUTOMATIC PHONE CALL NOTIFICATION FOR EMERGENCIES
The Washington County Consolidated Communications Agency (WCCCA) has a system to be used during an emergency to notify multiple residents using the enhanced 9-1-1 database. A NAC member asked the Mayor for more information on this system and I have included that information at the end of this newsletter. The information is titled "The Communicator! (Community Notification System)".

FIVE MINUTES TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY!
If you find it difficult to set aside time to prepare for emergencies, you're not alone. Public surveys list "lack of time" as the primary reason people cite for not taking steps to prepare themselves and their families for a major emergency. Rather than viewing emergency preparedness as an insurmountable task, consider what you could accomplish in just 5 minutes.  Go to the following web site to learn more...

The Communicator! (Community Notification System)

The Communicator! Arch Map system is to be used during an emergency to notify multiple recipients using the enhanced 9-1-1 database in accordance with WCCCA agency directive 3.4.16.

The notification system is configured to process a single call as follows:

The system calls a phone number (or numbers!)  associated with the activation.

If the call is answered, (by a citizen or an answering machine) a recorded message is played).

Female Voice: Hello, this is the Washington County emergency notification system. Press a key on your phone now to receive an important message.  (This "voice" is built into the software system and can be edited, but not deleted.)

If a key is pressed, another message is played.

Female Voice: Hello this is the Washington County Communications Agency emergency notification system with an important message.

Then the recording that WE (WCCCA) record at the direction of the OIC is played. This is the custom activation message feature.

Female Voice: Do you want to repeat the message? Press 9 for yes or 6 for no.

If the citizen presses 9, then the custom activation message is replayed and the call is terminated. Else if 6 then the call is terminated.

Female Voice:          Goodbye. <call terminated>

If no key is pressed the call is terminated.

If an answering machine picks up, the software tries to leave the message.  We have found however, that due to the differences in answering machines, sometimes a partial message is left or it is garbled in some fashion.  This would be an issue with the software manufacturer.
